Lightning has spread one on one. Mouth to mouth, brain to brain, heart to heart. We want to scale that up. To do it institution to institution. CoopPay Global is a non-profit initiative that builds standards and evidence for how regulated cooperative institutions can safely and credibly adopt Bitcoin’s Lightning Network.We begin with a form of organization that already embodies decentralization, self-custody, and trust networks — Co-operatives.
Real institutions, not experiments.
Across the world, cooperatives collectively manage over USD 2.5 trillion in assets and serve more than 1 billion members — yet remain locked inside legacy financial rails. In the Philippines, more than 30,000 cooperatives serve 12 million members, operating in banking, insurance, health, credit, energy, and utilities.These are not informal groups. They are regulated financial institutions — with boards, auditors, and governance models built on trust and prudence. They have capital to deploy and communities to serve, but lack a credible model showing that Lightning can be integrated legally, safely, and in line with cooperative principles.That’s the gap CoopPay Global fills.
We aim to make Lightning boring enough for regulators and credible enough for cooperative boards — so that they can confidently fund Lightning-oriented infrastructure themselves.
